01 / Understanding
Understanding Gum Disease.
Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease. The gums become inflamed by plaque bacteria at the gumline. Signs include bleeding when brushing, mildly swollen or discoloured gum tissue, and sometimes bad breath. Gingivitis does not involve bone loss and is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene.
Periodontitis develops when untreated gingivitis progresses and the inflammation extends below the gumline, damaging the ligaments and bone that support the teeth. Periodontal pockets form between the gum and the tooth, and if untreated, bone loss continues, teeth become loose, and eventually may be lost. Periodontitis is not reversible once bone has been lost, but it can be arrested and managed.
Because periodontitis is not painful in most of its stages, it often progresses silently. A significant proportion of adults have some degree of periodontitis without being aware of it.
02 / Approaches
Treatment Approaches at Designer Smiles.

Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning). For early to moderate periodontitis, deep cleaning removes plaque and calculus from within periodontal pockets and smooths the root surfaces to help the gum tissue reattach. Usually performed under local anaesthesia, quadrant by quadrant.
Laser-assisted periodontal therapy. Dr. Kavita Bhat Kumar completed specialized laser training in soft and hard tissue applications at the University of Bonn, Germany. Where appropriate, a dental laser is used to remove infected tissue within periodontal pockets and disinfect the area, while preserving healthy tissue. It may be used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce bacteria and inflamed pocket tissue. Suitability depends on pocket depth, disease stage, and the required access; it does not replace surgery in every advanced case. Periodontal surgery. Advanced cases where non-surgical treatment cannot adequately address the disease may require surgical intervention. This is planned and executed by our specialist periodontist.
Periodontal maintenance. Patients with a history of periodontal disease are placed on a maintenance schedule, typically every three to four months, to prevent recurrence and monitor long-term periodontal health.
