Most people who ask us about full mouth implants are tired of one thing: their dentures.

The denture that slips when they laugh. The one that clicks while they talk. The adhesive. The way they've quietly stopped eating certain foods, or started cutting everything into small pieces. Some are worried about parents in their 60s or 70s who have lost most of their teeth and are struggling at mealtimes.

If any of that sounds familiar, there's a real alternative. Full mouth dental implants give you a fixed set of teeth that stays in your mouth. No removing it at night, no adhesive, no slipping.

This guide explains how it works, the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6, what it costs in Mumbai, and what the process actually feels like.

Quick answer

  • Full mouth implants replace a whole arch of teeth with a fixed bridge held by a few implants. You don't need one implant for every tooth.
  • All-on-4 uses four implants per jaw. It often works even when bone has shrunk, and it costs less. At Designer Smiles it starts from ₹1.5 lakh per arch.
  • All-on-6 uses six implants per jaw. It spreads the bite over more support, which can suit strong biters and grinders. It starts from ₹2 lakh per arch.
  • Implant-supported dentures clip onto implants but can be removed for cleaning. They start from ₹1 lakh per arch.
  • In suitable cases, fixed temporary teeth can be fitted within 24 to 72 hours of surgery. Final teeth come after about 3 to 6 months of healing.

What are full mouth dental implants?

A normal implant replaces one tooth: one titanium post, one crown.

For a full arch of missing teeth, that would mean 10 to 14 implants per jaw. That's expensive and needs a lot of bone. So dentists developed a smarter approach.

A few implants, usually four or six, are placed in the jaw. A full bridge of teeth, made as one piece, is then screwed onto them. The implants act like strong pillars. The bridge looks and works like a complete row of natural teeth.

It's fixed. Only your dentist can remove it, usually just for professional cleaning.

All-on-4: how it works

With All-on-4, four implants hold the full arch. Two go straight in at the front. The two at the back are placed at an angle.

That angle is the clever part. It lets the back implants use the stronger bone towards the front of the jaw and avoid areas where bone has thinned, like near the sinus in the upper jaw. That's why All-on-4 is often possible without bone grafting, even for people who have worn dentures for years.

The concept has strong long-term research behind it. Nobel Biocare, the company that developed it, reports long-term studies with prosthesis survival rates of around 99% over follow-up periods of 10 years and more.

All-on-4 often suits you if:

  • You've lost most or all of your teeth, or have teeth that can't be saved
  • Your bone has shrunk, and you'd rather avoid grafting
  • You want fixed teeth with one surgery per jaw
  • Budget matters, and you want the most cost-effective fixed option

All-on-6: how it works

All-on-6 uses six implants per arch. The two extra implants share the chewing force, so each implant carries less load.

The trade-off is that All-on-6 needs more bone, especially towards the back of the jaw. Some patients need a bone graft or sinus lift before or during treatment.

All-on-6 often suits you if:

  • You have good bone volume
  • You have a strong bite or grind your teeth
  • You have a larger jaw
  • You want extra support and are comfortable with the higher cost

Which is better? Neither one is "better" for everyone. It depends on your bone, your bite and your budget. A 3D scan of your jaw usually makes the answer clear. If All-on-4 is enough for you, we'll tell you so.

What about implant-supported dentures?

There's a third option worth knowing about. Implant-supported dentures clip firmly onto two to four implants. They stay put while you eat and talk, but you can take them out at night to clean them.

They cost less, starting from ₹1 lakh per arch at Designer Smiles. They're a big step up from a normal denture, especially for the lower jaw, where loose dentures are most annoying.

Fixed (All-on-4 or All-on-6) feels most like natural teeth. Clip-on dentures are easier on the budget and simpler to clean. Both are far better than a denture that slips.

Your final cost depends on:

  • One jaw or both. Many people start with the jaw that bothers them most.
  • The implant system. We use established systems, including Nobel Biocare® and Straumann®, chosen to suit your case.
  • Bridge material. Options range from acrylic to zirconia. Zirconia is stronger and looks more natural, but costs more.
  • Extractions. If failing teeth need to be removed first.
  • Bone grafting or a sinus lift, if needed.

You'll get a clear, written cost after your consultation and scan, with no hidden charges.

A word on very cheap quotes. Full arch implants are a big, long-term treatment. If a price seems far below the market, ask which implant brand is being used, what the final bridge is made of, and whether temporary teeth, follow-ups and the final bridge are all included.

What the process looks like, step by step

  1. Consultation and 3D scan. Our implant team checks your gums, bite, existing teeth and bone with digital imaging. You'll know whether All-on-4, All-on-6 or another option suits you.
  2. Planning. Implant positions, the angle of each implant and the design of your new teeth are planned in detail, and you get a written cost.
  3. Surgery day. Any failing teeth are removed and the implants are placed under local anaesthesia, usually in the same sitting. You're awake but the area is fully numb.
  4. Temporary fixed teeth. If the implants are firm, a fixed temporary bridge is attached within about 24 to 72 hours. In some cases it isn't suitable, and you'll have a temporary denture during healing instead. Either way, you won't be left without teeth.
  5. Healing. Over the next 3 to 6 months, the implants fuse with your jawbone. You eat soft foods for the first 6 to 8 weeks.
  6. Final teeth. Your permanent bridge is made, fitted and adjusted for your bite.
  7. Aftercare. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning, when the bridge can be removed and cleaned properly.

Total time from first consultation to final teeth is usually around 4 to 6 months. Visiting from outside Mumbai or abroad? The first trip, for consultation, surgery and temporary teeth, usually takes about 7 to 10 days. The second trip, after healing, is for your final teeth. Our dental tourism page explains how we plan this.

Does it hurt?

This is usually the first question. The honest answer is that the surgery itself isn't painful, because the area is completely numb.

Afterwards, expect some swelling and soreness for about 3 to 5 days. It's usually manageable with the medicines prescribed. Most people say it was easier than they feared, and easier than living with loose teeth for years.

If you feel nervous about dental treatment, you're not alone. Our Signature Comfort Menu is there for every visit: noise-cancelling earphones with your own music, an eye mask and fleece blanket, a warm towel and neck massage afterwards. And yes, ice cream after surgical procedures, which genuinely helps keep the area cool.

Am I too old for full mouth implants?

Usually not. We regularly see patients in their 60s and 70s who do very well. Age matters less than:

  • General health. Conditions like diabetes need to be well controlled, and we may coordinate with your doctor.
  • Gum health. Any infection is treated first.
  • Smoking. It slows healing and raises the risk of implant problems. Cutting down or stopping around treatment time really helps.
  • Medicines. Some medicines, such as blood thinners or certain bone medicines, need planning. Bring a list to your consultation.

For many older patients, fixed teeth make a huge difference to everyday life. Eating properly, speaking clearly and smiling without worrying can change how someone feels about family dinners and social events.

How to look after full mouth implants

  • Brush twice a day, especially where the bridge meets the gums.
  • Use a water flosser or interdental brushes to clean under the bridge. We'll show you how.
  • Come in for check-ups and professional cleaning, usually every 6 months.
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
  • Don't smoke, if you can help it.

Looked after properly, implants can last for decades. The bridge may need maintenance or replacement after several years of normal wear.
