Some people love the gap in their front teeth. It's part of their face, and plenty of famous smiles have one.
Others have spent years tilting their head in photos, smiling with their lips closed, or pressing their tongue against the gap without even thinking about it.
If you're in the second group, this guide is for you. The good news is that a gap between the front teeth is one of the easiest smile problems to fix. The slightly confusing part is that there are five different ways to fix it, and the right one depends on why the gap is there and how big it is.
Here's how each option works, what it costs, how long it takes, and how to work out which one suits you.
Quick answer
- Small gap, healthy teeth: composite bonding is often the quickest and simplest fix, usually in one visit.
- Small to medium gap, and you also want to change shape or colour: veneers.
- Medium to large gap, or gaps across several teeth: Invisalign or braces, to actually move the teeth together.
- Gap because a tooth is missing: a dental implant.
- Gap that is new or getting bigger: get your gums checked first. This can be a sign of gum disease.
Why do gaps between teeth happen?
The proper dental name for a gap is a diastema. It usually shows up between the two upper front teeth, but it can happen anywhere.
The common causes are:
- Teeth that are small for your jaw. There's simply more space than teeth.
- A thick or low frenum. This is the small fold of tissue that connects your upper lip to your gum. If it's large, it can hold the front teeth apart.
- A missing or undersized tooth. Very common with the teeth next to the front two, which are sometimes small and peg-shaped.
- Habits. Long-term thumb sucking, or pushing the tongue against the front teeth when you swallow (called tongue thrust).
- Gum disease. When gums and bone weaken, teeth can drift apart. This is the one cause you should never ignore.
Cleveland Clinic has a good plain-English overview of these causes if you want to read more.
An important point. If you had no gap before and one has appeared in the last year or two, don't jump straight to cosmetic treatment. Teeth that start spreading apart in adulthood are often a sign of gum problems. Treat the gums first. Close the gap after.

Option 1: Composite bonding
Best for: small gaps, usually up to about 2 mm, on healthy teeth.
The dentist adds tooth-coloured resin to the sides of the teeth next to the gap, shapes it by hand, hardens it with a light, then polishes it. The teeth end up slightly wider and the gap disappears.
Why people like it:
- Usually done in a single visit, about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth
- Little or no drilling, and often no injection
- Your natural tooth stays almost untouched
- Easy to repair or adjust later
What to know:
- Lasts around 5 to 7 years before it may need polishing, a touch-up or replacement
- Can pick up stains from tea, coffee and smoking over time
- For big gaps, filling the space this way can make teeth look too wide
The result depends heavily on the dentist's skill. Good bonding should be invisible. Bad bonding looks bulky. Read more about composite bonding at Designer Smiles.
Option 2: Veneers
Best for: small to medium gaps, especially when you also want to improve the shape, length or colour of your teeth.
Veneers are thin custom shells fixed to the front of your teeth. To close a gap, they're made slightly wider than your natural teeth.
You can choose:
- Composite veneers from ₹10,000 per tooth at Designer Smiles. Often one visit.
- Porcelain veneers from ₹15,000 per tooth. Made in a lab, last longer, and resist stains much better.
- E.max veneers, a premium, very natural looking porcelain.
Why people like it: you fix the gap, chips, stains and uneven edges all at once. Porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or more with good care.
What to know: porcelain veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel to be shaped. That part is permanent. And if the gap is big, veneers alone can make the front teeth look too wide.
Our veneers cost guide covers the types and prices in much more detail.

Option 3: Invisalign clear aligners
Best for: medium to large gaps, gaps between several teeth, or when you'd rather not change the tooth surface at all.
Instead of filling the space, aligners slowly move your teeth together. You wear a series of nearly invisible trays, each one slightly different, for 20 to 22 hours a day.
Why people like it:
- Nothing is added to or removed from your teeth
- Fixes the real cause of the gap, the tooth position
- Almost invisible, and you take them out to eat
- Can fix crowding and bite issues at the same time
What to know:
- Takes longer. Simple gap closures can take a few months. Bigger cases take longer.
- You must wear the aligners properly every day
- You'll need a retainer afterwards, or the gap can come back
Designer Smiles is a certified Invisalign® Provider. Treatment starts from ₹50,000 for the full treatment, and you can see a 3D preview of your teeth moving before you begin. Invisalign also has its own overview of how aligners close gaps.

Option 4: Braces
Best for: large gaps, multiple gaps, or cases with bite problems that aligners can't handle as well.
Traditional braces use brackets and a wire to pull teeth together. They work very reliably and usually cost less than aligners.
What to know: they're visible (ceramic braces less so), you'll need to avoid hard and sticky food, and brushing takes more effort. Like aligners, you'll need a retainer afterwards.
Option 5: Dental implant (when a tooth is missing)
Best for: gaps that exist because a tooth is missing.
If the gap is there because a tooth never grew or was lost, closing it with bonding or aligners often isn't the right answer. Instead, the missing tooth needs replacing.
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone, topped with a natural looking crown. It doesn't affect the teeth next to it, and with good care it can last for decades. At Designer Smiles, implants start from ₹30,000 per implant.

What about the frenum?
If a thick frenum is holding your front teeth apart, closing the gap with aligners or bonding alone may not last. The tissue can push the teeth apart again.
A small procedure called a frenectomy trims or releases this tissue. It's quick, usually done under local anaesthesia, and with laser dentistry it often heals faster with less discomfort. It's usually done along with the gap treatment, not instead of it.

So which one is right for you?
A simple way to think about it:
"I just want this one small gap gone, quickly." Bonding.
"I don't only want the gap closed. I'd like my front teeth to look better overall." Veneers, maybe with whitening first. This is often part of a larger smile makeover.
"I have gaps in more than one place, or my teeth are also a bit crooked." Invisalign or braces.
"I want the most natural option and don't want anything added to my teeth." Invisalign.
"There's a tooth missing." An implant.
Many people end up with a combination. For example, aligners to bring the teeth closer, then a little bonding or a couple of veneers to perfect the shape. That's normal, and it often gives the most natural result.
How we treat gaps at Designer Smiles
- Consultation. We check your teeth, gums, bite and frenum, and take digital X-rays if needed.
- Find the cause. Small teeth, a missing tooth, a thick frenum or gum problems all lead to different plans.
- Show you the options. With prices, timelines and what each one means for your teeth long term.
- Preview. For aligners, you see a 3D simulation. For bonding or veneers, a mock-up can be done in suitable cases so you can see the look first.
- Treatment. In a private room, with the Signature Comfort Menu: your own music, noise-cancelling earphones, a warm towel and neck massage afterwards, and a cup of Kashmiri Kahwa.
- Aftercare. Retainers if you had aligners or braces, plus regular check-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions about Closing a Gap Between Front Teeth
Yes. Small gaps can often be closed with composite bonding or veneers, without moving the teeth. Invisalign is another option that moves the teeth without metal braces.
It depends on the method. At Designer Smiles, composite veneers start from ₹10,000 per tooth, porcelain veneers from ₹15,000 per tooth, and Invisalign from ₹50,000 for the full treatment. Bonding is priced after consultation. You get a written cost before treatment starts.
Composite bonding. In most small gap cases it's done in a single visit of about an hour.
It isn't permanent, but it lasts around 5 to 7 years with good care, sometimes longer. After that it may need polishing, a touch-up or replacement.
It can, if you stop wearing your retainer. Teeth naturally try to move back. Wearing your retainer as advised keeps the gap closed.
Yes. If a gap appears in adulthood or gets bigger over time, get your gums checked. Gum disease can weaken the bone that holds teeth in place, which lets them drift apart.
Usually not. Bonding often needs no injection. Aligners cause mild pressure for a day or two with each new tray. Veneers and implants are done under local anaesthesia.
Yes, gaps in baby teeth and early adult teeth are very common and often close on their own as more teeth come in. If you're unsure, our children's dentistry team can check.
